GIS is an acronym for a geographic information system. Two well-known examples of GIS software are QGIS and ArcGIS. For the second of these packages, due to the cost, licensing restrictions and complexity of the configuration of ArcGIS, we recommend that you contact your institution's IT services department or the vendor ESRI to see what options are available for you, either locally or by using ArcGIS with a commercial cloud provider like AWS and Azure.
